Woodworm Treatment for Roof Timbers in East Yorkshire

Woodworm is the larva of a wood-boring beetle — in East Yorkshire homes usually the common furniture beetle — tunnelling through rafters, purlins, joists and floorboards in the roof space. We inspect the loft, confirm whether the infestation is still active, treat the affected timbers with an insecticidal timber treatment, and replace any timber that has lost its strength. Because we are roofers, we also deal with what let the beetle in: the leak, failed flashing or condensation that left the timber damp.

Priced per job after a free loft inspection: treatment-only jobs are the least expensive; timber replacement adds to the cost. Fixed written quote, no deposit. See our full price guide.

What's included

  • Loft and roof-void inspection of rafters, purlins, joists, wall plates and boarding
  • Identifying the beetle and whether the infestation is active or historic
  • Insecticidal treatment of every accessible surface of the affected timbers, by spray or brush
  • Cutting out and replacing timber that has lost structural strength
  • Finding and fixing the leak, condensation or poor ventilation that let the timber get damp
  • A written record of what we found, what we treated and what we replaced, with photographs

Signs you may need woodworm treatment

Spotting these early usually means a smaller, cheaper job. If any sound familiar, it's worth getting the roof looked at.

  • Small round holes, about 1–2 mm across, in loft timbers or floorboards
  • Fine, gritty dust (frass) below the holes or on the loft insulation — fresh frass means it is active
  • Small brown beetles on loft windows and sills or in the roof space between May and October
  • Rafters or joists that feel soft, or crumble at the edges when probed
  • A survey or mortgage valuation has flagged woodworm in the roof

Materials & options

Treatment only

Where the timbers are still sound but the infestation is active, we clear insulation and stored items away from the timbers so every surface can be reached, then treat all affected timber. The loft is left for the re-entry time on the product label before anyone goes back in.

Treatment plus timber replacement

Where boring has weakened rafters, purlins or joists, we cut out the failed sections, splice in or replace with new pre-treated timber, and then treat the whole area.

Treatment during a re-roof

If we are already stripping your roof, the exposed rafters can be treated before the new covering goes on — by far the cheapest and most thorough time to do it.

How it works

A straightforward, no-pressure process from first call to finished job.

  1. InspectionWe go through the whole roof void with a torch and probe, look for fresh frass and live beetles, check the timber for damp and photograph what we find.
  2. Report and fixed quoteYou get a plain-English report: which beetle it is, whether it is active, which timbers are affected, what needs treating and what needs replacing — with a fixed written price.
  3. Treatment and repairsTimbers are cleaned of dust and debris, weakened sections replaced, and all affected timbers treated. We also fix the leak or ventilation problem behind the damp.
  4. HandoverA written record of the product used and the areas treated, with photographs, for your own records and for any future sale of the house.

Woodworm Treatment for Roof Timbers — frequently asked questions

How do I know whether woodworm is active or old?

Old holes are dark and dusty inside; fresh ones are clean and pale with fine, light-coloured frass around them. New frass appearing after you have wiped a surface, or beetles emerging between May and October, means it is active. Old, inactive holes in a dry roof usually need no treatment at all, and we will tell you so.

Does woodworm mean my roof is unsafe?

Rarely. The common furniture beetle bores slowly and mostly in the outer sapwood, so most infestations weaken timber very little. Real structural damage comes from infestations left untreated for years in damp timber, or from house longhorn and deathwatch beetle, both much less common in ordinary East Yorkshire homes. We probe every affected timber and replace anything that has lost strength.

What treatment do you use, and is it safe for my family and pets?

A water-based insecticidal timber treatment, usually permethrin-based, applied to the surface of the affected timbers; it kills larvae and emerging adults as they pass through the treated layer. The loft must be left empty for the re-entry time on the product label, normally a matter of hours, and we tell you exactly how long before you book.

Why would a roofer treat woodworm?

Because the beetle needs damp timber. Roof timbers only become a target when a leak, failed flashing or condensation has raised their moisture content, and treating the beetle without curing the damp invites it back. We can do both in one visit, and if the roof is being re-covered anyway the rafters are already exposed.

Will treatment satisfy a surveyor or mortgage lender?

Lenders and surveyors usually want evidence that flagged woodworm has been dealt with. You receive a written report with photographs of the inspection, the treatment and any timber replaced; keep it with your house documents.

How much does woodworm treatment cost?

It depends on how much timber needs treating and whether any needs replacing — a treatment-only job in a terrace loft is a very different job from re-timbering part of a roof. We quote fixed in writing after inspecting the loft, and the inspection is free when you own the property.
