Do I Need Scaffolding for My Roof Work?

It's a fair question, because scaffolding can be a chunk of a roofing job's cost — so people naturally want to know whether it's truly needed. The short answer: a full re-roof or any real work across a slope needs proper scaffold every time, while small, low, single-point repairs can sometimes be done safely from a tower or ladder. The deciding factor is always what's safe for the actual job, not what's cheapest on paper.
When scaffolding is non-negotiable
- Re-roofs and re-tiling — you're working the whole slope and shifting a lot of material; there's no safe way to do that off a ladder.
- Fascia, soffit and guttering runs — roofline work along the eaves needs a stable platform the full length.
- Chimney work — a stack needs a proper scaffold or tower around it, never a ladder leaned on the roof.
- Anything two storeys or awkwardly pitched — height and angle rule a ladder out fast.
When a tower or ladder is enough
A genuinely small, low, one-spot job — a single slipped tile within easy safe reach, a quick look, a minor gutter clear — can often be done from a scaffold tower or a properly footed ladder. We'll always use the lighter option where it's safe, because there's no sense charging you for scaffold you don't need.
