Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal in York
Mature trees are part of York's suburban character, and beneath them — across Dringhouses, Bishopthorpe and the leafier streets of Acomb — shaded north-facing slopes turn green within a few seasons. We clear moss by careful hand-scraping rather than jet-washing, which older slates and pantiles will not forgive, then apply a biocide treatment and empty the gutters and downpipes of everything that came off. Village roofs in Dunnington and Wheldrake, sheltered by hedgerows and garden trees, benefit every bit as much.

Moss Removal & Cleaning in York: local factors
Better insulation has a side effect few people expect. A well-insulated roof loses less heat through the covering, so the tiles stay colder and hold dew longer, which is exactly what moss and algae want. A modern energy-efficient house is no more immune than an old slate terrace.

In York we stripped a hipped roof whose original plain tiles were badly spalled and re-covered it in Russell Bute 3 — an interlocking concrete tile made to look like traditional small plain tiles — over new breathable membrane and treated battens, finished with a dry hip and dry ridge system and a dry valley, so there is no mortar on the roofline to crack or wash out.
When to call us in York
- Visible green moss growth across the tiles
- Gutters overflowing or full of moss and debris
- Granules and moss washing down into the gutters
