Pitched & Tiled Roofing in Hornsea
Hornsea’s roofs meet the North Sea head-on, and the covering has to be chosen and fixed for it: Welsh slate on the Victorian and Edwardian promenade villas, clay pantiles on the older cottages near the Mere and the church, and concrete interlocking tiles across the bungalow estates. On this coast every slate and tile is fixed with stainless or copper nails and clipped where the manufacturer allows, because galvanised fixings rust through in salt air and an unclipped tile is the first to leave in an easterly gale.

Pitched Roofing in Hornsea: local factors
Older pantile and slate roofs were often laid straight onto battens and torched underneath, mortar pointed into the underside of the covering to keep wind and snow out. It crumbles with age, and slips follow. Once stripped, the roof goes back with a breathable membrane, new battens, and ridge and verge fixed dry to BS 5534, rather than mortar that will only need doing again.
