Velux & Skylight Installation in York
Terraced streets in Fishergate, South Bank and Heworth rarely leave room to extend outwards, which is why so many York households look up instead — and a properly flashed roof window is at the heart of any loft plan. We fit VELUX and similar units into slate, pantile and concrete-tiled slopes across the city and its villages. In conservation areas, and on listed buildings especially, street-facing slopes can need consent, so we advise honestly on positioning; a rear elevation is usually the sensible answer.

Velux & Skylights in York: local factors
Position is a planning question before it is a building one. On the Heslington streets named in the city's Article 4 direction, a roof-light in an elevation facing a highway needs planning permission outright, and on a listed building consent is required whatever the slope. Everywhere else the answer depends on the address, so confirm the position with City of York Council before anything is measured.

In York we stripped a hipped roof whose original plain tiles were badly spalled and re-covered it in Russell Bute 3 — an interlocking concrete tile made to look like traditional small plain tiles — over new breathable membrane and treated battens, finished with a dry hip and dry ridge system and a dry valley, so there is no mortar on the roofline to crack or wash out.
When to call us in York
- A dark loft conversion, landing or internal room
- An existing roof window that leaks or has misted up
- Wanting more natural light and ventilation upstairs
